One of PBA’s unique innovations was on-demand aircraft scheduling. This allowed for multiple-sections of flights to be operated when required, based on current demand. These multiple-sections of flights necessitated the creation of these cardboard boarding passes, in a number of different colors, which were handed out at checkin. This way you were sure to be put on the correct plane with your luggage.

e.g. “PBA Would like to announce the boarding of the second section of flight 1234 from Provincetown to Boston. All passengers holding Red Boarding Cards numbered 1-9, please board through gate 2.”
